What is IndTech

The Industrial Technology Industrial PhD School (INDTECH) and its continuation, INDTECH PLUS, includes 20 students employed by partner organizations while pursuing PhD studies at MDU. INDTECH focuses on Industry 4.0 and applied AI in production systems, supported by strong partnerships with networking organizations. Top researchers from MDU’s engineering specializations at the School of Innovation, Design, and Engineering and the School of Business, Society and Engineering collaborate to address industrial challenges in PhD research projects, emphasizing the deployment of digital technology in production. This provides graduates with interdisciplinary perspectives and supports MDU's digitalization and Industry 4.0 strategy.

IndTech Partners

INDTECH includes a large consortium with nine leading industrial companies, RISE IVF and RISE ICT research institutes, the MITC technology center, and initiatives like AI Sweden, PiiA, Automation Region, and Blue Institute. This collaboration fosters cross-industry synergies, creating lasting value for PhD students, industry partners, MDU, and Sweden.

Co-production between MDU and partners in INDTECH will produce 15 PhD graduates in strategically critical fields. INDTECH PLUS expands the initiative to 20 PhD students, with comprehensive postgraduate courses, industrialization activities, and traditional scientific work.

Coordinated Research Tracks

The supervision teams include academic and industrial supervisors across three tracks—Computer Science, Industrial Systems, and Energy & Environmental Engineering—aligning academic excellence with industrial needs.

Expected Results

INDTECH and INDTECH PLUS will:

· Enhance expertise in areas critical to Swedish manufacturing.

· Establish Industry 4.0 and applied AI as MDU themes of excellence.

· Strengthen production engineering and the regional/national innovation ecosystem.

INDTECH is pivotal for Sweden’s industrial competitiveness and academic excellence.
