MDU's Profile Area
TSS is a strategic Mälardalen University (MDU) profile area Trusted Smart Systems (TSS) – “Pålitliga Smarta System” in Swedish, which in the MDU strategy for 2023-2025 is identified as one of two MDU profile areas. TSS is rooted in existing strong research at the School of Innovation, Design, and Engineering (IDT). TSS focuses on solving societal challenges through cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and Smart Production.
Funded by MDU with 21.2 MSEK annually, TSS supports an ecosystem involving approximately 300 researchers. In this ecosystem, TSS acts as a spearhead for strategic development, by promoting excellence, renewal, and alignment with long-term societal challenges.
TSS's Mission
In a rapidly evolving world, where technological advancements like AI and IoT redefine our daily lives, Trusted Smart Systems (TSS) aims to bridge the gap between innovation and societal well-being by contributing to the creation of technology that is not only advanced but also trustworthy and beneficial to society.
TSS’s Mission is to promote research with the societal impact of the highest academic standards within its scope of Trusted Smart Systems. TSS is a strategic initiative to strengthen the global research position at the MDU’s School of Innovation, Design, and Engineering (IDT). In this sense, TSS provides a speared capability for initiating and developing strategic research directions. This contrasts with the responsibility of keeping the IDT staff funded, which is a concern for the IDT research directions.
TSS is Built on the Robust Foundation of MDU's Research Area
TSS is established on the robust foundation of decades of successful research at MDU into software and systems engineering, computer and data science, electrical and computer engineering, medical and health engineering, and production development.

The Primary Instruments
The primary instruments for TSS are strategic recruitments and calls open to any researcher at IDT. The recruitment aims to complement the existing excellence in areas of strategic importance. The calls provide the basis for the portfolio of projects and activities supported by TSS. Projects could range from shorter pre-studies, via smaller research projects, to larger strategic initiatives.
TSS is an open-profile area where projects and activities are determined through discussions with IDT researchers at all levels of seniority. All IDT researchers can apply to TSS calls. Decisions on fund allocation and activities are made collaboratively with the steering committee and, when necessary, by the IDT Dean. Additionally, TSS leadership consults IDT research direction leaders for input and encourages them to engage their teams for advice and proposals.
In addition to these primary instruments, TSS will engage in outreach activities such as conferences, workshops, and other meetings targeting both scientific communities and society at large.
