Energy4Greenhouse

Sector-coupling of Energy System and Greenhouses for Sustainable Year-round Food Production

The Energy4Greenhouse project will develop a robust and sustainable energy system for greenhouses by creating synergies between energy companies, industries and greenhouses.

This will be achieved through a combination of energy system optimization, simulation of food production and data mining. Together, these methods create opportunities for sustainable food production all year round in a northern European climate with increased profitability and less climate impact.

The project evaluates the Wall-based Confluent Jet technology, which enables controlled air currents along the greenhouse walls and over the cultivation area to create a uniform microclimate around the plants. The system efficiently uses low-temperature heat sources, such as industrial waste heat. The controlled air flows ensure an optimal balance between temperature and humidity, which is crucial for maximizing plant productivity. In addition, the technology enables the maintenance of carbon dioxide levels, which are essential for photosynthesis, while preventing condensation and maintaining even conditions throughout the greenhouse.
