Most Influential Paper Award at SEAMS 2025

5/12/2025

We are proud to announce that the paper "Software Engineering Meets Control Theory," originally published at the 2015 IEEE/ACM 10th International Symposium on Software Engineering for Adaptive and Self-Managing Systems (SEAMS), has received the Most Influential Paper Award at SEAMS 2025.

MARC’s own Alessandro Vittorio Papadopoulos, now a full professor at Mälardalen University and MARC research area 2 leader, is one of the co-authors.

The award recognises the paper's significant and lasting impact across academia and industry. It has shaped early-career research, influenced education, and fostered collaborations, with over 200 citations, six community meetups, and dedicated research groups formed at institutions such as Lund, Imperial, Cambridge, UChicago, and UIUC. The work has also been integrated into curricula at at least seven universities.

Co-authors of the paper have since secured over 10 major research projects (funded by DARPA, EU, EPSRC, DFG, NSF and SRC), graduated 10 PhD students and 11 master's/undergraduates, and contributed to industrial applications at Bosch, ABB, ZeroPoint Technologies, and a startup with two patents.

The committee praised the paper as “instrumental in bridging control theory and software engineering,” laying the foundation for engineering self-adaptive systems with formal guarantees.

We thank the SEAMS MIP Award committee for recognising this milestone a decade later—and for celebrating the long-term influence of foundational research.
