Overview of Project Outcomes

Geomatch'd is an innovative tool that allows the user to optimize the design of an integrated geothermal-sourced district heating system. The user can input annual heat and cooling demand and location (if sufficient data about local ground thermal properties are available in the gelogical database). The tool suggests a design and placement for the boreholes, depending on which option was selected (surface or ground water, closed or open-loop system), size of heat pump and heat exchanger, and preliminary cost calculations.

The optimization of the district heating network is currently done with a separate tool, although the aim in the project is to integrate all modules under a single, user-friendly application. A 2D map-based optimization is performed through profitability maps to assess the maximum distance in all directions between a heat source and a user based on economic indicators such as investment cost, ROI or LCOH. While a single heat source and single user are currently the focus, the tool should be expanded under the project's lifetime to multiple sources and users.

The third module under development is the peer-to-peer energy trading management system. HEATSYNC is a forward-thinking platform aimed at enhancing the efficiency of energy usage with a particular focus on heating and cooling systems in both residential and commercial buildings. Leveraging advanced sensor technology and data analytics, this initiative seeks to optimise energy consumption and promote sustainability. Data collection is currently ongoing in one of our demonstration sites in Limerick, Ireland. The specific sites earmarked for this vital hardware installation include the Hanratty Hotel (IPAS Centre), as well as the commercial properties at Hartigan’s Square and Chisel & Oak, with installations scheduled to commence in June 2024. These activities are essential for establishing a robust foundation for the HEATSYNC platform's data-driven energy optimisation capabilities.
