"I think marketing is interesting as a career as we are surrounded by it in our daily lives"

This article was written before our official name change on January 1, 2022 from Mälardalen University (MDH) to Mälardalen University (MDU).

Mark Philips, former student of International Marketing at Mälardalen University (MDH), has based his career on software marketing for international companies. He is originally from Ireland and currently lives in Stockholm.

What made you choose International Marketing as your field of study?

“I think marketing is interesting as a career as we are surrounded by it every day – on the bus, at the airport, in the store. It gets even more interesting when you look at it from a global perspective and understand how businesses market themselves across different markets.”

How have you benefited from your studies at MDH?

“My studies gave me a solid theoretical background, but the real value was through teamwork and the projects we worked on where I enjoyed working on cases with classmates and contacts from such different backgrounds. This has helped me immensely when it comes to working in international companies.”

How did it happen that you decided to attend Mälardalen University?

“I was living in Frankfurt at the time, working in my first job after University as a games tester, which was fun. However, I had always wanted a pursue a career in marketing, especially international marketing. I found the Master's Programme in International Marketing online while I was researching, and it seemed to match the direction I wanted to take my career in. Couple that with a chance to live somewhere new and interesting, and I was in.”

What is your best memory from your study time?

“The friends I made. I am lucky enough to still be in contact with a good few old classmates, and even on a trip to Bangkok a few years ago I got to hang out with one of them. The course attracted a very international set of students, which was interesting and made for good dinner parties!”

What do you do for a living today?

“I am currently Digital Marketing Director at Quinyx, which is a Swedish success story and one of the fastest growing Workforce Management applications globally.”

What are your views on the future – what will you be working with in 5 years’ time?

“I try not to think so far ahead, it keeps things more exciting. I will be happy if I am healthy, working in a role that is challenging and rewarding, and meeting fun people along the way.”

We encourage all alumni to cooperate with Mälardalen University in various ways, for example as a mentor and guest lecturer. What do you think of that idea?

“It is a great idea – I was happy to join the graduation ceremony for International Marketing this year, and it was a lovely experience. Having a strong alumni community can really help people starting off in their careers too.”

Is there anything else you want to share with us?

“I would like to say that if someone is reading this and interested in a marketing career with an international dimension, they should consider International Marketing at MDH. Feel free to reach out to me about it too.”
