Online courses at MDH attract international students

This article was written before our official name change on January 1, 2022 from Mälardalen University (MDH) to Mälardalen University (MDU).

With the FutureE project, which was completed during the spring, Mälardalen University (MDH) has developed sought-after online courses in Artificial Intelligence, Software Development, and Energy and Environmental Engineering. In addition to national students, the project's courses have also attracted applicants from about fifty countries around the world as well as professionals who need to develop their skills. The courses will continue during the autumn.

Around fifty people at Mälardalen University have been involved with the FutureE project. Researchers in the cutting-edge areas of Embedded Systems and Energy and Environmental Engineering, have together with regional and global business partners, developed twelve freestanding and flexible online courses at the Master’s level. Each course comprises 60–80 hours of study, 2.5 higher education credits.

Over the past ten years, MDH has been running several projects to develop online courses in a flexible format with a focus on skills development for professionals. Through FutureE, the University has expanded the target group to include both national and international students.

“Through the FutureE project, MDH has had a brand-new opportunity to attract international students where the format of the programmes means that students do not have to be physically located in Sweden to participate, ” says Ann-Catrin Davis, Project Manager of FutureE. Courses at the Master’s level, where we share our research results in our cutting-edge research domains, are also an important recruitment channel. Many of the doctoral students in the participating research environments started as students on courses or programmes at the Master’s level at MDH.

The courses in FutureE also marked the start of the development of one of MDH’s first online Master’s programmes in Environmental Engineering in Europe, namely the Master's Programme in Environmental Engineering for Sustainable Development. External link.

In addition, the project was able to respond to the private sector's request at short notice for extra course instances during the spring 2020. This meant that MDH, together with the companies, was able to offer laid-off staff a great opportunity for skills development (CPD) during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since the autumn 2019, more than 4000 people applied for the courses, of which approximately 1500 were admitted. Germany, Greece and the United Kingdom are the three most represented countries when it comes to international applicants.

The FutureE project, which has been funded by the Knowledge Foundation, was completed in March 2021. However, the courses will continue and the next course instance will be in the autumn 2021. More information about the courses and how to apply for them can be found on the following page: MDH’s Further Training and Competence Development.
