Bjarne Johansson is a Senior Software Developer at ABB. He has been working with the development of dependable embedded real-time systems that constitute the foundation of control systems for more than 15 years. Bjarne has an M.Sc. in Computer Engineering from MDU, and his main research addresses dependability-related challenges and possibilities spawning from the Industry 4.0 paradigm shift imposed on control systems.

About Bjarne's thesis

Distributed control systems (DCS) serve as the pivotal infrastructure for a multitude of automation solutions that facilitate the delivery of essential utility services, including fresh water and electricity, which we frequently utilize, yet often overlook in our daily lives. These services underpin the very essence of our modern society. Currently, these systems, much like the broader societal context within which they operate, are in the midst of a transformation aligned with the emerging paradigm of Industry 4.0. In this thesis, we explore the opportunities and challenges engendered by this Industry 4.0 metamorphosis, with a particular focus on augmenting the dependability of control systems.
